Landfill site assessment and location using GIS (Case study: Chavar city)

Introduction: Urban waste has always been a major concern for authorities. On the other hand, improper management of waste disposal is a sign of inadequate planning and a lack of attention to various environmental issues. Selecting a landfill for urban waste and its continuous monitoring are among the management issues that have a great impact in this regard.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to select a suitable landfill in Chavar City. For locating landfills, 10 criteria were used, including altitude, settlements (urban centers and villages), roads (main and rural roads), protected areas, slope, geology, land use, land cover, surface water, and precipitation.

Methodology: The present study is descriptive-analytical in terms of methodology, based on library studies and field surveys. To identify effective criteria for locating landfills, the theoretical foundations related to the category of urban waste were first studied and examined using existing sources, and then data related to the research title was collected. Each layer was converted from Vector to Raster after being prepared in the ArcGIS environment. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to determine the weight of each of the selected indicators. After overlapping the layers, the final landfill location map was obtained, and finally, it was analyzed and examined.



Results: The results of this study indicate that the criteria of surface water, distance from the city, distance from the village, and distance from protected areas have the greatest impact, while altitude, geology, slope, and rainfall have the least impact on landfill location. Based on the results, approximately 17.03 percent of the region's area falls within the suitable and very suitable zones, while about 48.24 percent of the area is classified as unsuitable and very unsuitable for landfill location.

Conclusion: Usually, the minimum distance of the landfill is considered to be 2 kilometers from the city, while the landfill is located a short distance from the city of Chavar. Environmental and health problems, such as water pollution, unpleasant odors, and the presence of pests, are among the issues associated with this waste. Therefore, it is necessary to move the current landfill site and select a new site for it based on the results of this study.
