Investigating Safety and Security of Sidewalks Adjacent to Shopping Malls with Emphasis on Walkability (A Case Study of Ramsar)

Abstract
Introduction: Planning and designing cities based on the needs of pedestrians is one of the new approaches that has been considered in recent years, especially in large cities. In most cities of Iran, giving priority to the car-oriented system in urban roads endangers the safety of citizens and reduces their social vitality and dynamism.
Objectives: The present study tried to study the safety and security of sidewalks adjacent to shopping malls with an emphasis on walkabilty in Ramsar a city in the north of Iran.
Methodology: The research methodology is descriptive-analytical and the statistical population of the research included commercial users located in the two main streets of the city, namely Motahhari and Razzaqi. By determining the number of samples, two types of questionnaires were prepared and completed for vendors and citizens. To analyze the collected data SPSS, Friedman and Spearman correlation tests were applied.
Result and Discussion: The results of Spearman show that there is a positive correlation between the elimination of the car-based function of street and security- safety in Motahari and Razaghi streets. The value is more than 0.569 (57%), which infers that safety is 57%. Based on the ranking test of the safety and security components of the sidewalks adjacent to shopping malls, it was determined through the Friedman test that the permeability component with an average of 5.00 and the safety component with an average of 4.80 were in the first and second ranks, respectively. They have the greatest impact on the safety and security of sidewalks. Also, the facilities component with an average of 2.51 is in the last rank.
Conclusion: Therefore, the results of this study strengthen the pedestrian system of the two streets, and can greatly improve the level of safety and security of citizens.
